Some traditions survive on stubbornness. This one survives on its people.
Since 1917 the City has been public golf's proudest streak — no gate, no invitation, played every single year. Costs rise; the promise shouldn't. Friends of the City keep entry fees within reach of anyone good enough to tee it up.
Why we ask
Municipal golf made this championship. Keeping it municipal costs more every year.
The City has never been a country-club event. It belongs to the caddies, juniors, teachers, firefighters and retirees who learned the game at Harding and Lincoln — and to whoever walks up next. That openness is the whole point, and it is the thing most at risk as course rates, insurance and operating costs climb.
We would rather ask the community than price out its players. Gifts from Friends of the City go first to holding entry fees down and underwriting entries for players who need it, and then to keeping the streak — and its hundred years of history — alive for the next generation.
This isn’t a donation drive with a thermometer on it. It’s the same arrangement that has carried the City since 1917: the people who love this championship carry it.

Entry fees held within reach
Course rates, insurance and operations climb every year. Giving absorbs those increases so the cost of teeing it up doesn't decide who gets to compete.
Underwriting players
Direct support for juniors, students and players for whom an entry fee is the difference between watching and playing the City.
Keeping the streak alive
Played every year since 1917 — through wars, earthquakes and pandemics. Contributions fund the unglamorous work that keeps an all-volunteer municipal championship running.
Preserving the history

Exactly one Championship entry fee. Your gift puts a player on the first tee who otherwise wouldn't be there — the most direct way to keep the field open to everyone.
